What Should be Bought Organic & What Doesn’t Need To Be

Are you sick and tired of being told that you need to buy organic foods?  Does it really make that much of a difference?

I mean first of all organic food is usually more expensive, and secondly most of us aren’t even sure why non-organic foods are so bad for you (or not nearly as good).

It’s the pesticides that are so bad for your, but foods have been tested by 3rd party organizations, like EWG and the USDA, for their pesticide levels, and some turn out to be not so bad. These tests have also taken into account how the foods are typically washed and prepared.

So here’s a list of the foods that don’t need to be bought organic:

·        Broccoli

·        Banana

·        Kiwi

·        Asparagus

·        Frozen Sweet peas

·        Mango

·        Pineapples

·        Frozen sweet corn

·        Avocados

·        Onions

Now you can quit wasting your money on organic bananas, and just pick up the regular kind.  And actually, many foods with thick skin that doesn’t absorb chemicals can be safe to eat.  To be fair to organic foods, they do have more benefits than just the lack of pesticides.  They taste far better and have more nutrients also.

The Dangers of Pesticides

There is a growing consensus in the scientific community that even small doses of pesticides and other chemicals can hurt your health, especially during vulnerable periods such as fetal development and childhood.

Organic products are much more expensive, usually costing about 10-40% more than conventional products. However, a few conventionally grown foods are notoriously contaminated with pesticides.  These foods are unsafe and should only be bought from organic farmers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that even after washing, some fruits and vegetables consistently carry much higher levels of pesticide residue than others. If possible, these foods should be bought organic.

The Most Dangerous NonOrganic Foods:

Strawberries: Strawberries are the single most pesticide-contaminated fruit or vegetable in the United States. Strawberries receive up to 500 pounds of pesticides per acre. 36 types of pesticides can be found on 90% of tested conventional strawberries.

·        Nectarines: 26 different pesticides were found on 97% of nectarines

·        Peaches: 45 different pesticides are applied to peaches in conventional orchards. 94% of peaches are contaminated.

·        Apples: Apples are sprayed with 36 types of pesticides. 91% of tested apples were contaminated.

Others

·        Cherries: 25 types of pesticides were found on 91% of cherries tested.

·        Imported Grapes: Imported grapes run a much greater risk of contamination than those grown domestically. Vineyards are sprayed with 35 different pesticides. No amount of washing or peeling will eliminate contamination because the grape’s thin skin doesn’t block the pesticides.

·        Pears: 35 different pesticides were found on 94% of pears.

·        Raspberries: 39 pesticides were found on 59% percent of raspberries tested.

·        Bell peppers: 39 pesticides were found on 68% of bell peppers tested.

·        Celery: 29 pesticides were found on 94% of celery tested.

·        Potatoes: 29 pesticides were found on 79% of potatoes tested.

·        Spinach: 36 different pesticides can be found on 86% of conventional spinach.

·        Lettuce is also a bad one.

Meat, Poultry and Dairy

Organic meat and poultry means that the animals were reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones. These things are actually *banned* in Europe.

The only thing they’re likely to ban in the U.S. is natural medicine, which by the way is being re-discovered and embraced in the less corrupt countries like Germany.

Many health experts have raised concerns that the use of antibiotics in the meat and poultry industry may be contributing to the emergence of new drug-resistant bacteria.  Of political campaign funders will veto any Government public warning.

In addition, certified organic animals are not fed animal by-products to reduce the risk of diseases, including mad cow disease.

Even dairy products contain antibiotics and growth hormones, while organic versions of the same products are free of these harmful substances.

Other Problem Foods

Corn: the majority of domestic corn has been genetically-modified.  These people have some power.  They get corn syrup into just about every food imaginable.  Then they get T.V. commercials to twist and distort FDA statements to tell us that it’s not bad for you.

Rice: Pesticide use on rice fields in California’s Sacramento River Valley, one major growing region, has been so heavy that it has contaminated even the groundwater.

Rules to Follow When you *Can’t* Buy Organic:

1. Buy fresh vegetables and fruits in season. When long storage and long-distance shipping are required, more pesticides are used.

2. Trim fat from meat and buy skim milk. Hormones and pesticide residue often concentrate in animal fat.

Feel free to comment asking about foods not listed above, and you’ll get a reply as to how dangerous the pesticide levels are.

I am surprised that you say there is no need to buy organic bananas and Mangoes.
Bananas and Mangoes have since long been ripened by chemical sprays and powder. They also use gases to ripen then.
Just yesterday a friends collegue was telling that his own father who is a farmer, injects a chemical into watermelons to make to red.
You people are a very ignorant lot when it comes to pesticides, please do not mislead the public, with such information.
There is absolutely no research on the side effects of these sprays that are used on bananas to ripen them, and the watermelons I just heard about them yesterday. We all know that raw fruits have very less nutrients compared to ripe fruits.
Also you fail to acknowledge that the one of the main reason a person should eat organic is because of the nutrients. Organic food has more nutrients and is more tasty too.
Even pineapples are wrongly put on your list. It is very obvious you have not seen an organic pineapple, or you just don’t have the knowledge to identify any differences between the two. An organically grown pineapple is very yellow and naturally very sweet. In India they make a sweet dish from semolina to which pineapple is added for flavour and color. But nowadays Tartrazine and Yellow 5 colors are added to it as the regularly grown pineapple does not lend any color to the dish when added(people have associated the color yellow to the dish and hotels do this as they dont add enough pineapple or no pineapple to save costs, but sadly people have started doing it at home too out of ignorance). I had the luck of eating the dish to which organic pineapple were added and it made the dish yellow color and of course the taste was amazing.
Please do some more research and then come back and rewrite this article(for the moment remove it from the net as many people will be mislead)
    Thank you

No offence, but you’re talking about India. This list is one that was compiled from extensive studies performed in the U.S. by a the EWG (environmental working group).

Yes, organic foods are much more nutritious. This page simply adds some balance to the arguement in an effort to show people which foods have consistantly shown to have significantly less pesticide levels.

It doesn’t matter what pesticides are used to keep the bugs off of the food, what matters is that the food isn’t contaminated with pesticides when you eat it. As I mentioned in the article: “These tests have also taken into account how the foods are typically washed and prepared.”

Water melon wasn’t on the list “safe” list. Thanks for letting us know it should be on the “danger” list (atleast in India anyway).

But again, this page is based on extensive testing, and not here say.

It does matter what pesticides are used to keep the bugs off of the food. The vegetables and fruits are contaminated with pesticides when the rain brings them down to the soil are passed thru the roots of the plants. Everything man has done to alter the natural process of bacterial inhabitance in plants, animals and humans, has caused nothing but mutations of cancerous cells. Most bateria was created for beneficial purposes, and without them decomposition cycles that enrich the soil is stopped, leading to depletion in essential vitamins. Antibiotics fall in the same catagory as pesticides, since they do the same damage in humans and animals, by killing the flora(good bacteria) causing all kinds of digestion problems, leading to cancer the digestive tract.
