Medical Prescriptions:

These drugs increase the risk of suicide and loss of perception of reality.

SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors): These drugs include Zoloft and Prozac.  They block the reuptake of serotonin (the “feel good” hormone) to keep it in the brain.  These are the first drugs prescribed tfor depression.  Side Effects can be nausea, diarrhea, agitation, insomnia, decreased sex drive, and orgasm problems.  Major cautions are tremors, seizures, heart rhythm disturbances, and of course suicide.  Alcohol should be avoided.

SNRI’s (Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors): This work by increasing amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.  All the common drug side effects apply.  Major Cautions are suicide, difficulty breathing, fainting spells, mania, insomnia, vomiting, yellowing of skin and eyes, increased blood pressure, and seizures.

TCA’s (Tricyclic Antidepressants): These are used for many mental conditions by doing what SNRI’s do.  Side effects may include blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, impaired sexual function, and weight gain.  The Major cautions are glaucoma and low blood pressure.

MAOI’s (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors): These drugs inhibit the breakdown of norepinephrine in the brain to relieve fear and depression.  The common side effects such as insomnia, weakness, vomiting, trembling, and weight gain apply.  Major cautions are chest pain, difficulty breathing, heartbeat problems, fainting, and yellowing skin and eyes.

Atypical Antidepressants: These drugs work in similar ways to the rest.  The side effects are also similar.  Major cautions are seizures, suicidal thinking and behavior, maniac episodes and hallucinations, confusion, and mydriasis.

Natural Doctors’ Prescriptions:

Sunlight has many, many health benefits including energy, vitamin D, healing skin, and mood.  It causes the brain to produce Serotonin.  Refined and artificial sugars worsen depression.  And most importantly, studies have shown exercise to have comparable benefits to the depression drugs.

St. John’s Wort: Several studies have demonstrated that this herb improves mood, decreases anxiety, and insomnia related to depression.  It increases the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.  One study showed it as being similarly effective to Paxil in moderate to severe depression. Research of 23 randomized clinical studies has shown it to be just as effective as the depression drugs are for mild to moderate depression.

SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine): a variety of clinical trials have shown this amino acid like substance to be effective in relieving depression.  It’s function is to cause the formation of mood-elevating hormones such as serotonin and dopamine.  Studies have shown SAMe to be comparable to tricyclic antidepressants and imipramine (Tofranil) but with less side effects.

I have been diagnosed with BiPolar disorder. I was unable to take many of the SSRI’s due to them putting me into mania. I have taken several different drugs such as Paxil, Welbutrin, Lamictal to name a few.

I weaned myself off all prescription medicines and now treat my disorder with St. John’s Wort and the amino-acid L-Tyrosine. I have no side effects with these natural remedies and am doing far better coping day to day than I ever did with prescription medication. I can only encourage all individuals to try natural remedies for their depression. You may not be able to completely come off of prescription medicine, but you will definitely increase your quality of life.
